The energy and excitement not only of dramatic landscapes such as the Pembrokeshire coast, but also working steam engines and old farm machinery are my inspiration. I work from sketches, photos, notes and memories.
Walking in wild and rugged places means travelling light, so a small sketchbook plus pens, pencils and watercolours are always in my backpack for making quick drawings and notes about colour and light. And a camera is useful when walking with others, in crowded areas such as museums and for recording movement.
Back at home decisions are made about media and usually several images on a theme are developed at the same time, often using a combination of Indian ink, oil pastel and watercolour on paper. Some are figurative, some more abstract, depending on my theme.
